'Parasite' Movie Poster
This movie poster redesign was part of a project run in my first year at university. I chose to redesign Bong Joon-Ho’s ‘Parasite’ poster, partly as an excuse just to watch the movie again.
My concept hinged on the idea of the Kim family tearing apart and entering into the Park family’s lives, through the use of one of the Park family’s photos. I aimed to add an extra layer of interaction for viewers by making the Kim family somewhat hard to immediately see, upon closer inspection they become visible.
I achieved a first in this project.
I made this decision because the typeface is a very basic font that is used in code programs and is heavily involved in code in general, this had relevance to the film because of the underlying Morse code, that is presented throughout the film, which has heavy connotations to normal code.
Lowercase text
Another key decision I'd made when typesetting my poster revolved around the nature of my image and the idea I was trying to present through my design. My poster focused on the class inequality between the two families and it's because of this that I also wanted to represent this idea through my typeface decisions also.
This led to my decision to set the title in all lowercase to try and represent the lower class and themes of class inequality I'd presented through my poster thus far.
Shadowed faces
In an attempt to add another layer of tension to the design, I decided to shroud the Kim family faces, that are shown through the gap in the tear, in a shadowy darkness. Lighting is quite a key factor throughout the film and I think the decision to place the Kim family in shadow/ darkness gives them this ominous undertone as the peer out from the shadows into the foreground.
